EP Review: The Sonder - Into The Light

Earlier in 2019, Liverpool band The Sonder broke onto the scene with their captivating debut EP ‘Beneath The Dust’. Now with ‘Into The Light’, the four piece have returned sounding more refined and mature. This progression is undoubtedly impressive, as few bands seem to find their groove this quickly.

Opener ‘Knockin Down My Door’ is a rip-roaring start that seems to transport you to a local Liverpool pub. The clinking of glasses and applause of the crowd open the track, with the vocalist’s Scouse twang complimenting the energetic instrumentation.

Throughout the EP, the band pay homage to their musical heritage while still sounding very much of the moment. The uplifting jangle of Merseybeat can be heard throughout the record, while subtler influences like folk and even skiffle music set the band apart as something quite unique.

‘Have Mine’ shows the band’s potential for writing anthemic tunes, as the lead singer utilises a Liam Gallagher-esque drawl in the chorus. The highlight of the EP is the closer ‘Is It Any Wonder’, a track which really showcases the songwriting on the project.

‘Into The Light’ is an intriguing snapshot of youthful hope, with a sense of melancholy that is tempered by a optimistic whimsy. The band showcase themselves brilliantly in the 13 minute run-time, creating a coherent body of work that allows them to exhibit different elements of their craft.
