Single Review: Fauna - Didn't Wanna

Manchester quartet Fauna recollect on disillusionment in pre-covid times in their new alt-indie-rock anthem ‘Didn’t Wanna’. The new material from the breaking four-piece is their fourth single release in two years and the alt-rock choruses are enough to get you excited for the near return of live shows.

Reminding people that life was not always utopic when we had unlimited freedom to drink expensive alcohol and stand awkwardly on dancefloors without all of the restrictions, the track recollects on those nights out that end up being a major disappointment and you find yourself wishing you would rather be at home.

Despite the critical relatable disillusionment within the lyrics of the song, the impassioned alt-indie-rock track is run with a flood of unbridled energy and is a song everyone will want on their feel-good playlists. The addictive boldness of the track sweeps through the soundscape and demands to be listened to as the sonic furore carries nuances of 70s rock and 60s psych-pop instrumentals.

Filled with their usual warm, melodic, danceable rhythms and explosive hook-filled choruses, ‘Didn’t Wanna’ is a surefire floor-filler that takes you into another world whilst you recollect on similar memories before being thrown back out into reality. The sonic angular riffs throughout the song never lack energy and exhibit a clear influence from classic rock bands like Kings of Leon, The Strokes, and Foals.

For a band springing out of the Manchester music scene, Fauna have made sure they are not crawling out of a mould casted by the Madchester scene that left an imprint on the city in the late 1980s and are a breath of fresh air with their electric, well-blended indie-rock anthems.
