Single Review: Afternoon People - Sovereign

Mancunian indie rock quartet Afternoon People deliver the exuberant anthem ‘Sovereign’, a tenacious debut single featuring an infectious blend of gritty vocals and frenzied guitar riffs, whilst maintaining a quintessential familiarity.

‘Sovereign” is propelled by cryptic musings, skittering drums, and northern attitude, with an enticing hook that sings “so come on, nobody’s watching you” before delivering a catchy chorus. The chorus culminates into a cathartic release of energy and strained emotion that maintains a rebellious vintage swagger throughout.

The melody makes the listener seem primed to sing along with it, even if you can’t understand the lyrics, making the track an empowering and enlivening experience. Similarly, the title ‘Sovereign’ may allude to the liberating sense of power and freedom that the track elicits. The track closes with an impressive guitar solo, which loops back into the chorus to bring the track to a finish.

This ambitious debut single encapsulates the bands intent to develop as performers and songwriters. Afternoon People are beginning to hone in on an engaging sound, as well as setting themselves in good standing for when live performances return.
