Single Review: Barney Goodall - Close To You

On April 21st, Barney Goodall released his new track ‘Close To You’, and it is a joy for the ears to behold. His voice is so crisp and poignant, and his display of range is gorgeous.

Goodall has had a successful few years already in his career, having already released ‘Weird Fishes/Arpeggi’ earlier this year, and having brought out two new albums last year alone. As with many artists, lockdown must have done wonders for his creativity, and we could not be more excited to see a more musical releases for the Liverpudlian.

‘Close To You’ is a raw expression of a wanting love, and Goodall’s experimentation with pitch and percussion produces a beautiful, mellow track. You could liken this track to a Del Amitri-esque composition, with its’ beach-day sea-breeze relaxation ambiance. Drawing lyrical comparisons to MGMT ‘Time To Pretend’, and adding in riffs that could have come straight out of an album by The Beautiful South, this track is for anyone who wants to be able to sit back and let song wash over them.

Goodall describes himself as a “creative mammal doomed to wander the earther for at least several more years”: a cautionary but methodical character reference. I, for one, cannot wait to see what the several more years have in store for this indie folk artist.
