Single Review: Biddy Ronelle - Drink

Country Rock singer Biddy Ronelle brings the post-lockdown spirit to life with ‘DRINK’, A loud, energetic song encapsulating the gritty night out we have all been missing. The first release of 2021 for the Midlands singer, the single emulates all the typical qualities of country and rock, blending them together perfectly.

The single opens with a strong electric guitar hook which will recur throughout the song. Although, this is toned down once the first verse of the single begins, the electric guitars come back into prominence as soon as the chorus comes into full flow. This is a song which contains similarities to those such as Kip Moore; the regular, fast beat, and the loud guitars, drums, and base.

However, Ronelle’s voice over these standard themes is a breath of fresh air. With an unusually gritty tone, resembling bluegrass female voices more than the standard ballad-singers of country music.  Ronelle’s voice undoubtedly carries this song, with the writing allowing for her voice to “speak” the verse to the listener. To a certain extent this makes-up for the rather standard electric guitar solo which does not contain much original flare away from the standard “country solo”, seemingly filling a gap rather than adding any unique musicianship to the song. This later improves at the very end, where the guitar hook climaxes and includes a guitar harmony, adding something different to the original strong hook.

Overall, this is a single which perfectly encapsulates the mood coming out of lockdown right now. A song which depicts a girls’ night out, and letting your hair down. Although the guitar riffs and themes of musicianship within the single may be reminiscent of other country rock artists, Ronelle’s gritty voice, and the occasional guitar harmonies brought a new flavour to this song making it an impressive return for Biddy Ronelle.
