Single Review: King No-One - Roll of the Dice

Formed in York in 2013, King No-One began like many other bands, busking and gigging relentlessly around the UK. Since then, they’ve been played on BBC Radio One and BBC Introducing, performed at Reading and Leeds festival as a main stage act and charted with their debut EP in March 2019. The trio are the epitome of modern DIY culture and have the fight for equality built into their ethos, adopting the tagline ‘No one is King. We are all born equal’.

Lyrically, the track explores how individual circumstances impact life and how luck is instrumental in guiding our path. The track’s introduction and chorus reflect these exact sentiments and are repeated throughout the song. A deeper tone appears during the bridge which creates the strong image that ‘luck don’t care’ with Zach Lout’s sleepy tone saying, ‘in the back of a Ferrari, with a matchstick lit in the petrol tank’, depicting how often life does not go the way we might have planned.

With strong chords that set the tone of the energetic piece, the track echoes classic indie bands such as The Wombats and the Arctic Monkeys. The use of electric piano, a strong bass guitar and drums helps to build an incredible tune for the summer, ready for the unpredictable year that is 2020. King No-One has released this rhythmic acceptance of the impact of luck during a particularly unlucky year, and their timing could not be better.
