Single Review: Knowones - Future Song / Before It’s Gone
Liverpool four-piece Knowones return with a double A-side that feels intentional rather than incidental. Futuresong and Before It’s Gone aren’t simply two new tracks released together – they operate as a statement of range, temperament and growing identity.
Futuresong arrives first, built on a captivating groove that pulls you in before you’ve quite decided how to read it. On the surface, it’s bright and immediate – tight rhythm section, buoyant guitar lines, a sense of forward motion that feels almost carefree. But there’s satire woven through its core. The lyrics carry a raised eyebrow, subtly prodding at cultural touchpoints and the machinery around modern music without ever lapsing into blunt cynicism. It’s sharp, but playful.
Central to its impact is the vocal – a storied, characterful delivery that feels lived-in rather than polished for effect. There’s personality in the phrasing, a conversational quality that makes the subtext land. It’s that balance between groove and commentary that gives the track its weight; you can move to it, but you can also read into it.
In contrast, Before It’s Gone leans inward. Slower and more reflective, it trades propulsion for atmosphere. The arrangement breathes, allowing space for melancholy to settle without becoming indulgent. Where Futuresong feels outward-facing and observational, this track is introspective – contemplative about time, change and the fragility of moments.
Taken together, the pairing reveals a band comfortable holding opposing emotions at once. There’s cynicism here, but also optimism. Bite, but also warmth. More than anything, these two tracks suggest maturity. Knowones aren’t circling a single sound; they’re refining a voice – one that feels increasingly self-assured and distinct.
