Single Review: Lina and the Lions - This Fire

Lina and the Lions’ latest single, ‘This Fire’, has all of characteristics of an 80’s synth-pop hit with a contemporary twist. The track begins with a stream of airy synth keys before singer, Lina Lane steps in with vocals that encapsulate the style of 80’s pop icons such as Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. The nostalgic, yet futuristic song engenders visions of neon lights and legwarmers as it so successfully captures the past, the present and the future in a matter of minutes.

The track continues to grow with a wall of swelling synths, key changes, and the quintessential reverb of a drum machine that makes the single so reminiscent of a hit from the past. When the bridge kicks in, it is almost impossible to not imagine ‘This Fire’ fitting alongside the likes of A-ha and other 80s smash hits. However, there is a freshness to the production of the track alongside the vocals that makes it a perfect fit to be an alt-pop bedroom-anthem.

‘This Fire’ makes for a great entry to the new year, filling its listeners with a warm fuzziness for the past and an optimism for what is to come. The track is joyful and dreamy and is an absolute delight to carry into new beginnings.
