Single Review: The Lathums - I See Your Ghost
There’s something charmingly old-school about the latest track from The Lathums. The lead single from the Wigan quartet’s upcoming third EP, ‘I See Your Ghost’ embraces a seldom-heard indie-funk sort of sound, favouring individual notes from its bass and guitars rather than chords, resulting in a track that’s extremely hard not to nod along to, and paves the way for a new sound in the band’s forthcoming music.
The band themselves describe the new EP as ‘different to the material [they’ve] previously released,’ being ‘dark but with happy undertones’ – and it’s very easy to see why. At its heart, ‘I See Your Ghost’ is about being haunted by a broken relationship and trying to come to terms with the fact that it’s ended – in that sense, it’s reminiscent of Neon Trees’ ‘Nights’ that dropped earlier in the year, but The Lathums pull back on the punch slightly and focus instead on the more general feel of the track, allowing it to stand on its own beautifully.
Alex Moore’s vocals are wonderfully suited to the vibe the group have gone for this time around, and the speed at which he delivers many of the lines is truly admirable. Johnny Cunliffe’s bass skills are excellent, too, with his notes being the crux of much of the song’s musical impact, while Scott Concepcion’s guitar and Ryan Durran’s drums give the song the impact it needs to land its emotional feelings. ‘I See Your Ghost’ is certainly different to anything we’ve heard from The Lathums before, but that’s no bother for the group: they embrace this new sound with ease, and if the rest of the new EP is of the same calibre then we’re in for a real treat this Halloween.
