Single Review: Velvet Shakes - World

Despite still considered to be largely in their infancy, Velvet Shakes are rapidly gaining traction with their shimmering concoction of cosmic pop. With four previous singles already under their belts, the Manchester quartet have powered through 2020 to release a vibey and glistening fifth.  Forming only in the summer of 2018, the band have become somewhat formidable amongst many of Manchester’s grassroots venues, and ‘World’ perfectly illustrates why.

Building on the psychedelic sound of ‘Believe It’ earlier in the year, ‘World’ packs a powerful punch with its trance-inducing synths. Laden with energy from the very first bar, the single hits different in the presently locked-down climate. Disco-driven beats emulate the vibe of an outrageous night out in town, whilst the track’s gliding melodies simply yearn for club coverage. Perhaps someday soon when the world returns to normal.

Similar in vibe to ‘Take Back The Track’ by The Magic Gang, it’s a welcomed reminder of what we have to look forward to moving forward. Speaking on the single’s influences, the band described it as a “conscious awakening and appreciation of our planetary home”. It’s safe to say that ‘World’ invites you to step away from your screen and view the outside world in its glorious technicolour.

Is this exactly what Velvet Shakes have needed to successfully enter the stratosphere? Quite possibly. Trance inducing and baked in infectious charisma, this single provides a shining light to guide us through the upcoming winter months. So buckle up and buckle in, because Velvet Shakes are ready for take-off.
