Single Review: Yungblud - Cotton Candy
YUNGBLUD’s latest release, ‘Cotton Candy’, from upcoming album Weird!, takes on a lighthearted, pop vibe reminiscent of the sugary melt-in-the-mouth candy it's named after. The bassline is undeniably catchy and immediately grabs your attention, with my foot instinctively tapping along on the first listen. Unlike many of his other releases, YUNGBLUD has taken a step away from politics to provide his fans with an anthem for having fun and letting go - regardless of the societal restraints that are placed on us with the music video ending with the bold typography ‘Sex ain’t a sin’.
Much like the playful upbeat track, the music video follows a similar candy-like feel in the pink and blue colour scheme and bright and bold coloured design aspects. In this sexually liberating sleepover, YUNGBLUD has not shied away from all gender and sexuality expression and described ‘This song is so important to me because I see and speak to my fanbase, I want to let them know that it is okay to be exactly who they are and have the right to unconditionally love who they want’.
YUNGBLUD continues to push his creative direction within the pop-punk genre, unafraid to step into a track focused on its lightheartedness and pop centric beat. With an album release in the very near future and digital world tour, we can’t wait to hear what YUNGBLUD has in store for us next.
