EP Review: Akemi Fox - Colour You In

Akemi Fox and her sultry tones have arrived in force, just in time for EP Colour You In to make it in as a late contender for EP of the year.

Fox’s smooth, chilled R&B is another example of the artistry originating from Manchester’s fascinating neo-soul and hip-hop scene. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most exciting burgeoning sounds from across the UK, and is music you can lose yourself for hours in. Fox appears to need nothing more than her incredible voice and the subtle production of her collaborator Teo to really showcase her talent.

One of the more upbeat offerings, ‘Summertime’ appears midway through the record and is a firm favourite with fans on social media. And the emotion-ridden track ‘Your Love’ - which Only A Northern One recently reviewed - has been described by Fox as the “song that will get you in your feelings”.

But the final track, ‘Lemon Tea’, is the icing on the cake in this short collation of mellow loveliness. In an Instagram post Fox shares an insight into what ‘Lemon Tea’ is all about. “The EP is named after the lyrics in Lemon Tea," she writes, "I wrote these when I was 16 and always wanted to use them for a song. The term symbolises relationships and the moments you help or bring joy to one another, describing the act as ‘colouring in’.”

Colour You In is an end-of-year contender for our favourite EP of the year, with her incredible vocal performance brought to life by Teo’s subtle yet intoxicating production style.
