Single Review: Blossoms - Pure Pop

In January, Blossoms released their third studio album Foolish Loving Spaces. Now, they have released an extended edition of the album including new single ‘Pure Pop’. While the album has been compared to the likes of Talking Heads (with some added disco), ‘Pure Pop’ is more reminiscent of Nirvana with its familiar rhythmic patterns yet still comfortably follows a true to Blossom’s style.

Contradictory to its title, ‘Pure Pop’ is a lot darker than the other tracks on the album in its tonality and composition, with it being unlike the Blossoms usual aesthetic. The track feels a lot heavier especially with its instrumental qualities including the deep guitar progression heard throughout the track.

Unlike the other tracks that precede it, the story is much different in ‘Pure Pop’ as well. While the previous tracks describe a blossoming relationship full of love and excitement, ‘Pure Pop’ sees the opposite with their partner slipping away and playing games. The track is exemplified in highlighting the talent of lead singer Tom Ogden in his songwriting, unafraid of stepping away from his usual upbeat positivity.

‘Pure Pop’, amongst the 5 added tracks, makes for a great addition to an already impressive album and highlights how Blossoms continue to succeed in all forms of pure indie music.
