Single Review: Bugzy Malone - M.E.N III
After 4 months of radio silence Bugzy Malone is back with the third installment of his legendary M.E.N series. It’s a breath-taking return that resonates with an honesty and passion that few other rappers can match. His lyrics are partly an update to his listeners - this is his first release since he was involved in an almost fatal motorcycle crash in March - while his verses also act as a mission statement for the future.
Echoing the previous installments, the focus is placed on the lyrics with the inspirational but subdued beat never taking away from his performance. In many ways it transcends the traditional tropes of UK rap - it feels like a raw, direct line to Malone’s soul. He unreservedly exposes his battle with mental health saying ‘I’ve gotta speak out’ - hardly a surprise given his recent trauma. As with much of the Manchester rapper’s previous work - his focus is on inspiring others by demonstrating his own ability to overcome hardship. Regardless of what he has faced, Bugzy makes it clear that he is determined to continue and succeed.
While his time in hospital may have left his voice sounding more scratchy and rough - the added rawness only adds to the overall power of Bugzy’s verses. This is a powerful return from the King of the North.
