Single Review: Jessica Luise - Television Mister

The third single from Warrington-based singer-songwriter Jessica Luise is a true marker of her talents. Where her first two tracks (‘Eyes Like Mine’ and ‘Better Place’) felt like a stripped-back version of Wolf Alice, ‘Television Mister’ pushes her into easygoing rock territory – a boundary she crosses with ease.

Straight away we get the sense that she’s pushing herself in a new direction; the track opens with a confident mix of bass and electric guitar that we haven’t heard from her before, while the drumkit in the background sets a steady pace. There's a laidback and charming sense of heart throughout the track, solidified by Luise’s warm vocals, which makes it a fun and engaging listen.

Part of that engagement comes from the song’s narrative; at its core, it’s a track about how our real-life romantic partners may not live up to the ideals we have in our heads. But don’t worry, it isn’t as heavy as all that sounds: it’s a song that feels fresh and invigorating, while also being relaxing and comforting, and marks the continued presence of a fantastic new talent in northern music.
