Single Review: Seprona - Phone Me Back

After successful tours and festivals across the country, Seprona are back with their first single release of 2021; ‘Phone Me Back’ is an indie anthem for the Liverpool 5-piece.

Already reaching 3000 streams in their first week, ‘Phone Me Back’ is a hip-shaking exploration into the regretful dangers of arguing whilst drunk with the point-of-view attempting to get someone to call them back. The lyrics are familiar, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone that hasn’t regretted saying something whilst intoxicated; ‘I hear the silence talk more lately’ epitomises that feeling. There’s a sense of yearning in the vocals that adds an extra, accompanying level to the lyrical emotionality.

And yet, the sound is instantly infectious and the production surprisingly uplifting, despite the sombre nature of the song. The opening soundscape is further filled with a nostalgic electricity that takes a modern and indie approach to the 1980s synth-pop sound to heighten the listening experience. The chorus is extremely catchy, with repetitions of the lyrics ‘I was confused, cold, drunk and alone’. Punchy drums and funky guitar riffs form the backbone of the songs indie-melodies.

There is an addictive boldness to the song’s themes that is simultaneously grounded in a feeling of passionate youthdom. The topics of relationships, alcohol and cigarettes are tokens from Seprona’s influences such as those like the Arctic Monkeys and Alex Turner’s exceptional lyricism.

Their blend of rugged indie-rock melodies with a new-age hypnotic energy creates an environment of audible dynamism, tastefully applicable to individual listening or sold-out shows. For those with playlists filled with the likes of Blossoms, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Two Door Cinema Club; Seprona are a must-listen and a great up-and-coming band to keep an eye out for.
