EP Review: Katbrownsugar - Neo-Stoned

An accomplished performer and producer, Katbrownsugar is quickly becoming a leading figure in Manchester’s neo-soul scene. Having dropped her first project in 2018, she is back with her new EP Neo-Stoned.

The first track ‘Jungle’ is simply excellent. It dazzles as an instrumental because it allows each element to individually shine. It has an electrifying spontaneity, as does the second track ‘OG’ - even though the structure of the tracks are vastly different, as it features vocal performances from both Katbrownsugar herself and guest feature Blvckmagic. It’s brimming with confidence and a hazy swagger that make it the perfect sound for lazy afternoons.

‘Cosmic Talk’ again presents a change in pace, and is followed by ‘Down On This Luck Interlude’ - an unapologetically original and classy track featuring Katbrownsugar’s sultry vocals. The final track ‘Greenman’ is more of a retro cut, and is a clear nod to Katbrownsugar’s influences but it maintains the same sparkle and energy as the other tracks on Neo-Stoned.

Neo-Stoned is an emotionally charged EP that demonstrates Katbrownsugar’s breadth of talent in five completely individual tracks. Like many EPs, it hints at a bigger project to come, but all the signs are here that whatever she drops next will be epic.
