EP Review: The Reytons - May Seriously Harm You and Others Around You
Sheffield-based indie-rock group The Reytons have an impressive discography of singles under their belt, and the long-awaited release of May Seriously Harm You and Others Around You has already landed them on track to get a UK Top 40 album, an astounding achievement for a six-track EP.
‘Red Smoke’ starts the album with a bang, with intense lyrics and head-wobbling drum beat, paired with a manic bass-guitar riffing. ‘Behind Enemy Lines’ has a similar toe-tapping danceability to it, and is about getting back to a girl’s house in an evening – the enemy lines being her front door.
Bringing back the high energy guitar, ‘Boys Broke Cartel’ is full of quotable lyrics such as “cos all the boys are on a bender, weekend offenders, causing all sorts of fun from unlicensed vendors” that we can already see being shouted in indie bars across the country. And then you reach the chorus, an earworm you will not soon forget.
Finishing off the EP, ‘Shoebox’ brings you back down to earth after a few tracks of heavy bass and beats. It’s a love song, in which they explore how showing love isn’t always an easy thing to do.
A punchy and memorable project from the South Yorkshire band - full of typically expressive imagery, pulsing riffs and manic drums. Make sure you stream May Seriously Harm You and Others Around You on Spotify, or purchase their EP on vinyl here.
