Single Review: Sophie and the Giants - Right Now

‘Right Now' is three minutes and ten seconds of pure, unadulterated pop perfection from Sophie and the Giants. Themes of self-love and recovery run through this celebratory anthem - there is a real sense of coming back stronger after a setback. Eponymous lead singer Sophie Scott’s richly layered vocals are a particular high point of the track.

This is the first release of 2021 for Sophie and the Giants. It follows on from ‘Hypnotized’, which has racked up an impressive 115 million streams on Spotify for the Sheffield-based four piece. ‘Right Now’ opens decisively as Scott belts out the couplet ‘Used up all my lives / Outrun throwing knives’, set to electronic drum beats from Chris Hill.

‘Right Now’ is a song for the times - a real tonic for this difficult period and it demands to be played at full volume. Toby Holmes is consistently strong on lead guitar, and Antonia Pooles’ bassline serves to tie the track together. Sophie and the Giants’ simple, fun-filled lyrics and punchy beats will make you wish you could let off steam in a club - but until 21st June comes around and restrictions are lifted here in the UK, we’ll have to settle for ‘dancing in the shower now’.
